The 3157 style is a dual output that can be used as a reverse bulb or turn signal/marker light.  It is designed to have a lower output from the typically constantly used mode (ex: a marker for the corner of your vehicle) and a high output mode when the second output is engaged (turn signal).  We offer this bulb as a switchback style for use on the front of vehicles where you would like to have the marker light illuminate in white rather than traditional amber.  When the turn signal is engaged on a switchback, the color changes to traditional amber.
